Paul Scerri works mainly in ceramics and also does printing and drawing. His career spans forty years, and he has exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world. Scerri began his studies under Esprit Barthet in the 1970s and followed this with a number of scholarships that allowed him to study in Italy, most notably at the Accademia di Belle Arti Pietro Vannucci in Perugia and the Istituto Statale d'Arte G. Ballardini in Faenza. Scerri returned to Malta to teach at the Art and Design Centre in Valletta and is also a part-time lecturer in Ceramics at the University of Malta. Exhibitions include Primo Concorso Avis, Faenza, in 1985 where he was awarded first prize, Running with Scissors, The Splendid, Valletta, 2015, Art Basel, Miami, 2016, Darkness at Noon, The Splendid, Valletta, 2021, and the International Biennial of Ceramics, Corsica, 2022. Scerri’s work can also be found in collections all over the world.
Paul Scerri’s stylised visual language poeticises the contradictions which guide the unfolding of human relationships. His evocative and alchemical sculptures delve into dreams and personal experience, and they excel at creating intrigue and enigma. He plumbs his own experience in order to explore the subtle shapes of distance, desire, loss and marginalisation.
